Who, Why and How!
After an informal conversation between three fellow Rotarians, a burning desire developed to make sure that the iconic Old bathurst Post Office Building would not suffer the fate of other similar buildings and be lost. A plan and proposal was put to The Bathurst Rotary Club. Fuelled by the enthusiasm and efforts of these three men, the Rotary Club committed a substantial sum of money over a five year period towards saving the building. Armed with that commitment the three men approached the building's owners, the City Of Bathurst, and put forward a proposal to take over the responsibility for the building, and to convert it into a Community resource. The City embraced the idea with much enthusiasm, and they too committed a large sum of money spread over the same five year time frame. Armed with that funding, the next step was to recruit other similarly enthusiastic and committed people to join them in forming a Not For Profit company to begin the arduous task of making their plans a reality. A Board of Directors, and Officers were appointed and began the task of making the restoration project come true.
Over the past three years - from early 2023 thro' to the present, the Board have worked tirelessly to commission a full engineering report, to cost out the preservation and restoration of the building, to approach local businesses, foundations and individuals to raise the necessary funds to carry out the work to bring the building up to current building code, whilst ensuring that we retain as much of the original character and features of the building as we possibly can.
The response to our fundraising has been phenomenal, and only goes to prove the tremendous love and affection that Bathurst has for this lovely old edifice. Bathurst has a great need for an Arts and Cultural Centre to enrich the lives of the people who make up this diverse, growing and vibrant population. It is our aim and our pleasure to make sure that this happens - Join with us to create a lasting legacy for all of Bathurst!
